New cars are confusing. With all the computers, sensors, and gadgets, it may seem like there’s

New cars are confusing. With all the computers, sensors, and gadgets, it may seem like there’s some sort of magical witchcraft taking place under the hood. We’re here to show you how modern automotive computer control systems work. Last week, we looked at variable valve timing. Today’s topic: Electronic Fuel Injection. Back in the day, a good ol’ carburetor was responsible for sending the appropriate amount of fuel into the cylinders. Today, that job belongs to the ECU. For a lot of you this is review, but if we want a new generation of car enthusiasts to care about cars, it can’t hurt to explain how they actually work. If the heart of a car is its engine, then its brain must be the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Also known as a Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the ECU optimizes engine performance by using sensors to decide how to control certain actuators in an engine. A car’s ECU is primarily responsible for four tasks. Firstly, the ECU controls the fuel mixture. Secondly, the ECU controls idle speed. Thirdly, the ECU is responsible for ignition timing. Lastly, in some applications, the ECU controls valve timing. Before we talk about how the ECU acco...

The annual SPS IPC Drives show in Germany is probably the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to

The annual SPS IPC Drives show in Germany is probably the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to developments in automation. We look at some of the highlights from the most recent event, held last November. The SPS IPC Drives show which took place last November in Nuremberg, Germany, was the last ever with that name. When the exhibition returns later this year, marking its 30th anniversary, it will be known simply as SPS. While the original name was derived from the German equivalent of PLC, SPS will in future stand for Smart Production Solutions. The organisers argue that a “hardware-centric” name such as SPS IPC Drives “no longer reflects the true core of current and future automation technology” which is shifting to software-based function blocks distributed across a wide range of hardware components. The final event under the old name attracted 1,630 exhibitors and 65,700 visitors to Nuremberg. There were 30 fewer exhibitors and 4,564 fewer visitors than the record numbers achieved at the 2017 show – perhaps reflecting the downturn in the German manufacturing sector. One of the dominant themes at the 2018 event was TSN (Time Sensitive Networking). Suppliers were falling ov...

Blow-molding-machinery-market-adjusts-to-changing-packaging-sector logo-pn-color logo-pn-color

The U.S. blow molding machinery market remained healthy in 2018, with some manufacturers reporting strong growth and others a spotty year with some sluggishness. Industrial blow molding faced tougher sledding with a slowdown in the automotive sector. But packaging remains strong, most executives said. Gary Carr, vice president of sales at Bekum America Corp., said customers this year seem to be doing more strategic planning about investments in blow molding machinery. “In years past, companies would make purchase decisions when they had programs in hand. Now they’re investing in future business opportunity,” he said. “There’s more long-range business planning.” For the first time, Bekum America had two booths at NPE in May: a main booth in the West Hall and a stand in the South Hall’s Bottle Zone. “We went into NPE2018, and normally business tails off before a major trade show. We didn’t see that this year, it just continued and it hasn’t slowed since,” he said. The brisk machinery business has led to longer lead times, however, out to six months or longer. Carr said the supply chain is full for key machinery com...

As usual, I’m sure it was a fun day for all of you, filled with family visits, outdoor cookouts, evening firework displays and the like. Ever wonder about Fourth of July celebrations in the Opelousas of old? Let’s talk about July 4, 1901, in the old village. It was only the second year of the 20th century, and Opelousas was flourishing like never before. The town was called one of the most progressive and most beautiful in Louisiana. More and more people wanted to visit to see this special place. Town leaders saw an opportunity to showcase the community by organizing events and activities to attract visitors from other parts of the state. Entertainment events were held at various ...

Shaken and stirred: Scientists capture the deformation effect of shock waves on a material

Understanding how shock waves affect structures is crucial for advancements in material science research, including safety protocols and novel surface modifications. Using X-ray diffraction probes, scientists at the Institute of Materials Structure Science of KEK, Tokyo of Tech, Kumamoto University, and University of Tsukuba studied the deformation of polycrystalline aluminum foil when subjected to a laser-driven shock wave. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2′); }); The foundations of engineering lie in understanding and manipulating the structure of materials to harness their properties in creative ways. Interactions between materials take place via the exchange of forces, so predicting a material’s ability to withstand a force and how it propagates is central to developing structures with enhanced strength. If an instantaneous strong force acting on a material results in a shock wave, the atoms may become displaced or dislocated. Like a rubber band, if the external force is not too significant, the internal forces can resist and the material can return to its original state (elastic deformation). But beyond a certain...

Banana bread is the perfect (and tastiest) solution for using up overripe bananas. Unlike traditional banana

Banana bread is the perfect (and tastiest) solution for using up overripe bananas. Unlike traditional banana bread recipes that call for refined white flour and white sugar, this recipe is made with coconut flour and is naturally sweetened with honey. I’ve also swapped the margarine for coconut oil, which is full of healthy fats. You could make the banana bread recipe even healthier by omitting the chocolate – but I wouldn’t recommend this, because a little bit of chocolate is good for the soul. 1 Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Prepare a loaf tin (about 900g capacity; silicone works best) by greasing the sides with a little coconut oil. 2 In a large mixing bowl, mix the coconut flour, cinnamon, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt. In another large bowl, beat the eggs. Add the honey, coconut oil, almond milk and vanilla extract, and whisk well to combine. Tip the dry ingredients into the bowl of wet ingredients, and whisk until combined. Mix in the mashed banana. 3 Melt the dark chocolate in the microwave for 60-90 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds. Fold the dark chocolate into the banana bread mixture very gently without over-mixing to create a marbled effect. 4 P...

The U.S. Is Overflowing With Natural Gas. Not Everyone Can Get It.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-u-s-is-overflowing-with-natural-gas-not-everyone-can-get-it-11562518355 Earlier this year, two utilities that service the New York City area stopped accepting new natural-gas customers in two boroughs and several suburbs. Citing jammed supply lines running into the city on the coldest winter days, they said they couldn’t guarantee they’d be able to deliver gas to additional furnaces. Never mind that the country’s most prolific gas field, the Marcellus Shale, is only a three-hour drive away. Meanwhile, in West Texas, drillers have so much excess natural gas they are simply burning it off, roughly enough each day to fuel every home in the state. U.S. gas production rose to a record of more than 37 trillion cubic feet last year, up 44% from a decade earlier. Yet the infrastructure needed to move gas around the country hasn’t kept up. Pipelines aren’t in the right places, and when they are, they’re usually decades old and often too small. The result, despite natural-gas prices that look low on commodities exchanges, is energy feast and famine. This spring, the price of natural gas at a trading hub near Midland, Texas, dropped as low as negative $9 p...
