Kids’ toy manufacturers urged not to use deadly button batteries after death of girl, 3

Metal detectors could be used by doctors to spot if children have swallowed tiny batteries after a three-year-old girl was killed by one.  The child died 10 days after swallowing a 23mm ‘coin’ battery from a TV remote in the run-up to Christmas in 2017. She was misdiagnosed with tonsillitis and prescribed antibiotics despite repeated trips to hospital.  The battery eroded the tissue between her oesophagus – the food-pipe – and the largest artery in her body, plunging her into cardiac arrest. Health experts have now suggested medics should be trained to use handheld metal detectors to discover if children have ingested them. Doctors misdiagnosed her with tonsillitis and she died over a torturous ten days The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) called for studies to be done to test whether the metal detectors would be effective in spotting the coins in youngsters with symptoms difficult to diagnose.  A number of ...

Global Optical Brighteners Market Industry: A Latest Research Report to Share Market Insights and Dynamics

Optical brighteners are chemical compounds that absorb light in the ultraviolet and violet region (usually 340-370 nm) of the electromagnetic spectrum, and re-emit light in the blue region (typically 420-470 nm) by fluorescence. Brighteners are commonly added to laundry detergents to make the clothes appear cleaner. Optical brighteners have replaced bluing which was formerly used to produce the same effect. Brighteners are used in many papers, especially high brightness papers, resulting in their strongly fluorescent appearance under UV illumination. Optical brighteners have also found use in cosmetics. One application is to formulas for washing and conditioning grey or blonde hair, where the brightener can not only increase the luminance and sparkle of the hair, but can also correct dull, yellowish discoloration without darkening the hair. Mission needs major funding to avoid an ‘environmental disaster’

Crews work on the land portion of a new $32 million sewer pipe project. However, more funding is needed before the line can be installed across the Fraser River from Mission to the JAMES Treatment Plant in Abbotsford. / District of Mission Photo The price tag for a new sewer line across the Fraser River has hit $32 million, and the District of Mission desperately needs more federal and provincial funding to complete the job and avoid a possible environmental disaster. “It is an emergency for us, but it’s an emergency for everybody,” said Mission Mayor Pam Alexis. The new sewer line is needed because the existing 37-year-old pipeline is at near capacity, and, because it is a pressurized line, cameras can not be placed into it to inspect its condition. Alexis said because the pipe is almost 40 years old and has been constantly subjected to rough waters and a lot of movement of rock in the area, the chance of it wearing down is significant. “It’s a risk factor, and I believe it would be much more expensive to clean up and repair and take action after the fact.” Mike Younie, the district’s chief administrative officer, said the pipe has already experienced a failure – about five yea...

Tribe Square entrepreneurship hub will offer support to William & Mary student startups

When you walk into the entrepreneurship hub at Tribe Square you see a tiled wall with the names of successful business startups of William & Mary alumni. Just one day after the space’s soft opening in October, students waited outside the door prepared to one day see the name of their creation on a tile. Supported by the Alan B. Miller Entrepreneurship Center at the business school, the $1.13 million hub will exist for students of all disciplines to pursue startup ideas with Launchpad, the region’s business incubator, right next door. “The mission was to equip all students with the skills and the mindset of entrepreneurs and those are here,” said Graham Henshaw, the executive director of the Miller Center. “So we started on that journey from an unlikely place and that was from the third-floor faculty level of the business school.” The college’s Board of Visitors were led on a tour of the new space as part of a Committee on Student Experience meeting Thursday. Henshaw took members through a community kitchen to the back of the building that will support eight diverse ventures launched by current W&M students, called Tribe Ventures. The projects, funded by endowments, could...

The Category 3 storm came to a standstill as it pummeled the Bahamas. It is expected

The Category 3 storm came to a standstill as it pummeled the Bahamas. It is expected to move “dangerously close” to the Florida coast Tuesday night. What happened to it? It pushed it way up! Oh my God. Power lines are down, lampposts are down, trees are across the street. It is very dangerous to be outdoors if you don’t have to be outdoors. As soon as the weather permits, our first responders will go to those areas where we had reports from individuals who were in distress. That’s my bedroom and the waves hitting there, that is over 15 feet. You look out here in the backyard, you can see the real depth. But the house is actually sealed really well. Look at these cars, man! Totally gone. We’re facing a hurricane, Hurricane Dorian, that, one that we’ve never seen in the history of the Bahamas. We are in a situation where the storm is stalling very close to our coast. It is going to make a movement. And the movement that it makes is going to have a lot of impact on Floridians. Hurricane Dorian continued its unrelenting assault on the Grand Bahama and Abaco Islands on Monday, causing “extreme destruction” as storm surges rose 12 to 18 feet above normal tide levels and at least five ...

Al-Hazaa adds maize milling to portfolio | 2019-04-12

While Jordan is home to multiple chip factories, there were no maize mills in the country to supply those facilities. Instead, the chip manufacturers were importing their raw materials from Turkey and Europe. Al-Hazaa Investment Group, seeing an opportunity to fill a need for the country and region, started work in 2016 on its Al-Hasad Maize Mill in the Daba area of Amman, Jordan. “This encouraged us to establish this mill, to supply the needs of the local market and neighboring markets,” said Khalid Al-Hazaa, general manager. The 200-tonne-per-day (tpd) mill is the first of its kind in Jordan, producing maize grits, corn flour, corn germ and other byproducts. The greenfield project, which includes a multi-story mill, storage silos and related outbuildings, cost $14 million to build and took two years to complete. “We have started this project from scratch and designed the mill and storage silos along with its outbuildings and all other facilities,” Khalid Al-Hazaa said. “We, as Al-Hazaa Investment Group, are very proud to have such a developed and unique project in the region that serves our country and other neighboring countries. We are intending to further expand the project...

At Laser World of Photonics 2019 in Munich, Germany (24–27 June), the firm is debuting the blue laser module technology, and also demonstrating its UL and IEC safety-certified high-luminance LaserLight-SMD and LaserLight-Fiber products. “SLD’s blue laser light modules feature up to 12 times the absorption, processing quality and speed compared to infrared laser technology,” reckons says president, chief operating officer & co-founder Dr James Raring. “This technology produces superior results in copper, aluminum, stainless steel, as well as other metals such as nickel, gold, titanium and silver that are commonly used for plating, other thin metal processes and 3D printing,” he adds. SLD’s blue la...
